New Kindles are a millimeter thinner, and every one has a user-replaceable battery
Amazon has refreshed the base Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft, and the base model is on sale now from $149.99.
If you have been holding off on an e-reader because the battery eventually dies and takes the device with it, the 2026 Kindles answer that. Amazon VP of Kindle Kevin Keith told The Verge that all of the new models have user-replaceable batteries, to comply with EU regulations.
The rest of the changes are shared across the line. The base Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft are each a millimeter thinner than the model they replace and 30 percent faster at opening books, and the power button has moved from the bottom to the right edge near the top, according to The Verge.
The entry-level model is the one Amazon is proudest of. Engadget reports it measures 6.8mm thick, a full millimeter thinner than its predecessor, weighs 140 grams and runs six weeks on a charge, and Amazon calls it the "most pocket-sized" Kindle it has ever made. It starts at $149.99 in graphite or a new purple called ube.
New this time is an aluminum version at $189.99, which doubles the storage and drops the ads. Engadget puts that storage at 32GB and lists the finishes as Alpine Sky Aluminum and Seaglass Green Aluminum.
The Paperwhite is thinner and lighter than before while lasting up to 12 weeks per charge, Engadget reports, and Amazon says it has the largest screen and the highest contrast ratio of any Paperwhite it has shipped, which should help under bright sunlight. The Verge, for its part, reports the display specs on the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft are unchanged and that it is the color options that are new.
Paperwhite pricing runs from $200 in Graphite. The Signature Edition is $249.99 and adds an aluminum back, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting lights and double-tap page turning, in Graphite or Seaglass Green.
Colorsoft gets a redesigned display with edge-to-edge color. Keith credits a new technique of applying a black layer between the edges of the panel, which stops the case color from visually bleeding onto the screen. The 16GB model is $290 in Graphite, and the Signature Edition is $319.99 in Graphite or Fig.
For anyone who misses real buttons, there is a $79.99 page-turner cover that adds physical page keys to the Paperwhite and Colorsoft, making them behave more like the old Oasis. All three lines also get Kids versions with child-friendly covers and an Amazon Kids+ subscription, from $180.
The base Kindle and its aluminum sibling are on sale now in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Australia. The new Paperwhite and Colorsoft arrive October 28th, with preorders open.
